Did you know that sleep is divided into two major types? They are: Non-REM (Rapid eye movement) or quiet, sleep and REM (Rapid eye movement), or dreaming, sleep. Sleep specialists have called non-REM sleep “an idling brain in a movable body.” During this stage thinking and most physiological activities slow down but a person may have some body movements. REM sleep has been described as an “active brain in a paralyzed body.” It is during this stage that dreaming occurs. While non-REM sleep consists of multiple stages, REM sleep is one single stage. We will discuss these stages in detail below.
Note: During your complete sleep cycle, REM sleep makes up for only 20 to 25% of your sleep, and this is a good average for healthy adults.

During this stage, your eyes are closed but you can be easily interrupted by a disruptive noise . This stage is also known as the ‘dozing off’ stage when the body is starting to relax but it has not fully relaxed. During this stage, the brain activities start slowing down. This stage usually lasts for 5 to 10 minutes. If not disturbed during this phase, the person sleeping can quickly move to stage 2.
During this stage, your heart rate slows down further, your body temperature drops , and eye movements stop. Though the brain activity slows down, there are still short bursts of activities – which are called sleep spindles. This stage accounts for 50% of the total sleep cycle.
This is the most restorative stage of sleep. During this stage, the body is completely relaxed, there are no eye movements, and your breathing slows and becomes more regular. It is during this stage that the body starts its repair work. Experts believe that this stage is important to strengthen your immune system. It is important to note that during deep sleep, disturbances such as noises or activity in the nearby surroundings may fail to wake the sleeping person. Stage 3 typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes.
People usually enter REM sleep within the first one and half hours of falling asleep. The brain activity during this stage resembles activity during waking hours. Your body temperature rises. Your heart rate and breathing also increase. Despite all these, your body hardly moves.
It’s important to note that sleep does not progress through the four stages in sequence. The cycle keeps on repeating throughout the night.
To get a full night’s sleep, it is important to protect your sleep environment against unwanted noises. Installing soundproof windows is a great way to prevent sound from entering your home.
